Biyografi (in Turkish)

Prof. Dr. Mehmet Önder Efe İ.T.Ü. Elektronik ve Haberleşme Mühendisliği Bölümünden mezun olduktan sonra Boğaziçi Üniversitesi Sistem ve Kontrol Mühendisliği Anabilim Dalında yüksek lisans, Elektrik-Elektronik Mühendisliği Anabilim Dalında doktora yapmıştır. Bir sene Carnegie Mellon Üniversitesi Elektrik ve Bilgisayar Mühendisliği Bölümünde DARPA tarafından desteklenen bir dağıtık robotik projesinde, ardından Ohio State Üniversitesi Elektrik Mühendisliği Bölümünde AFOSR tarafından desteklenen bir havacılık projesinde doktora üstü araştırmacı olarak çalışmıştır. Yurda dönüşünü izleyen yıllarda çeşitli vakıf üniversitelerinde Mekatronik Mühendisliği, Elektrik-Elektronik Mühendisliği, Pilotaj gibi bölümlerde öğretim üyesi olarak çalışmış, TÜBİTAK desteği ile TOBB ETÜ'de ve Ankara Kalkınma Ajansı desteği ile THK Üniversitesinde İnsansız Hava Araçları Laboratuvarlarını kurmuş TOBB ETÜ Elektrik ve Elektronik Mühendisliği Bölümünün lisans düzeyindeki laboratuvarlarının tümünün kuruluşunda görev almıştır. Bölüm başkanlığı, dekanlık ve rektör yardımcılığı gibi idari görevlerde bulunan Prof. Efe şu anda Hacettepe Üniversitesi Bilgisayar Mühendisliği Bölümünde profesör olarak çalışmaktadır. Prof. Efe, 2/2015-2/2018 döneminin Bölüm Başkanı, Donanım Anabilim Dalı başkanı ve Otonom Sistemler Araştırma Laboratuvarının kurucusudur. Prof. Efe dünyada saygınlığı olan bazı dergilerde editörlük/yardımcı editörlük görevi yapmaktadır ve Otomatik Kontrol Türk Milli Komitesi'nin 2012-2018 dönemi yönetim kurulu üyesidir.

Prof. Efe, insansız hava araçlarında otopilot tasarımı, otonom davranış, modelleme, kontrol, sensör füzyonu, agresif manevralar, nonlineer kontrol kurallarıyla bazı özel görevlerin gerçekleştirilmesi gibi konularda çalışmakta olup bu alanlarda (komuta-kontrol, aviyonik sistemler, görüntü tabanlı kontrol, pilotaj, sivil havacılık mevzuatı, İHA mevzuatı, bakım otomasyonu, kabin hizmetleri otomasyonu, havacılıkta bilişim uygulamaları, seyrüsefer/görsel/durumsal farkındalık gibi kokpit sistemleri, sensör simülasyonu, elektronik haritalar, havacılıkta kalite güvencesi, arttırılmış gerçeklik vb.) pek çok projenin değerlendirme süreçlerinde yer almış, TÜBİTAK (ARDEB/TEYDEB) ÇPDK üyeliği/koordinatörlüğü, EEEAG GYK üyeliği yapmış, önemli tüm savunma sanayisi firmalarımızın arge merkezi olması süreçlerinde de değerlendirici olarak rol almıştır. 210+ teknik eserin yazarı ya da eşyazarı olan Prof. Efe, uzmanlık alanlarında 5 adet Türkçe kitap yazmış, eserlerine 4000+ atıf almıştır. Prof. Efe'nin doktora tezi Boğaziçi Üniversitesi Araştırma Fonu tarafından 2000 yılında tez ödülüne, Devre Analizi 1/2 kitapları Türkiye Bilimler Akademisi (TÜBA) tarafından 2012 yılında kayda değer eser (mansiyon) ödülüne, Otomatik Kontrol Sistemleri kitabı da 2013 yılında TÜBA Telif Eser Ödülüne layık görülmüştür. Prof. Efe geçmişte TÜBİTAK Bilim Ödülü, TÜBİTAK Özel Ödülü, TÜBA Akademi Ödülü, TÜBA GEBİP Ödülü, TÜBA TESEP Ödülü, IEEE Türkiye Ödülleri ve TESİD Yenilikçilik Yaratıcılık Ödülleri gibi ülkemizin saygın ödüllerine hakemlik yapmıştır.




Biographical Sketch

Dr. Mehmet Önder Efe received the B.Sc. degree from Electronics and Communications Engineering Department, Istanbul Technical University (Turkey) in 1993, and M.S. degree from Systems and Control Engineering Department, Boğaziçi University (Turkey), in 1996. He completed his Ph.D. study in Boğaziçi University, Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department in June 2000. Between August 1996 - December 2000, he was with Boğaziçi University, Mechatronics Research and Application Center as a research assistant. During 2001, Dr. Efe was a postdoctoral research fellow at Carnegie Mellon University, Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, and he was a member of the Advanced Mechatronics Laboratory team. Between January 2002 and July 2003 he was with The Ohio State University, Electrical Engineering Department as a postdoctoral research associate. He worked at the Collaborative Center of Control Science. As of September 2003, he started working at Atılım University, Department of Mechatronics Engineering as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Efe was entitled Associate Professor in 2004 and Full Professor in, 2009. In August 2004, he joined Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department of TOBB University of Economics and Technology. Dr. Efe was the founding chairman of the department between August 2004-July 2007 and between June 2008 and August 2010. Dr. Efe has initiated the MS and Ph.D. programs in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at TOBB ETU, where he has taken several administrative positions. Between December 2010-May 2011, Dr. Efe was with the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Bahçeşehir University as a full professor and department chair in the last two months of this period. Dr. Efe was with the University of Turkish Aeronautical Association between May 2011-May 2013, and he held the positions Vice Rector of the university and the Dean of the Air Transportation Faculty between May 2011-April 2013, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Engineering between February 2012-November 2012. Since September 2013, he has been with the Department of Computer Engineering of Hacettepe University and he was the head of the department (2015-2018) and the head of the computer hardware division since 2013.

Dr. Efe was the head of IEEE CSS Turkey Chapter between January 2007 and December 2008, and he is currently a Senior Member of IEEE. He is the Editor of Transactions of the Institute of Measurement and Control, Editor of Measurement and Control, and he is/was in the editorial boards of the journals IEEE Transactions on Artificial Intelligence, Applications of Modelling and Simulation, Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics, Mathematical Problems in Engineering, International Journal of Industrial Electronics and Control and Advances in Fuzzy Systems, Applications of Modelling and Simulation.

Dr. Efe is the author/co-author of five books and more than 210+ technical publications focusing on the applications of computational intelligence, unmanned aerial vehicles and systems and control theory. Dr. Efe is the recipient of Ph.D. Thesis Award of Boğaziçi University Research Fund, Remarkable Work Award of 2012 by Turkish Academy of Sciences (TUBA) for Circuit Analysis volumes I and II, and Copyrighted Book Award of 2013 by Turkish Academy of Sciences (TUBA). Dr. Efe was the referee for highly prestigious national awards, TUBITAK Science Award, TUBITAK Special Award, TUBA Academy Award, IEEE Turkey Awards and TESID Industry Awards for Innovation and Creativity.

Social Interests

  • I play guitar in the flamenco style since 1993 and I like playing traditional flamenco works. I find listening to Paco Pena, Paco de Lucia, Manolo Sanlucar and Vicente Amigo joyful. I also play baglama, which is an Anatolian folk instrument. Several versions of baglama are available and I find shorttail one more comfortable to play. I very gratefully acknowledge the efforts of Necdet Kazancioglu and his son, Savas Kazancioglu, for starting my "performer's life" with mandolin, in 1980-1981.
    ... and these are some examples of "baglama", which is a classical Anatolican folk instrument.

  • I like observing how babies learn and improve their perception and reactions. One of my fields of specialty is intelligent systems and observing the first 18 months of a baby is an invaluable experience. Clearly I conclude that the evolutionary process of millions of years selects the best performing/quickly learning/well adapting ones.
  • I like being with my friends and having weekend brunch.
  • Swimming (though I can't do it) is another favorite...
  • Playing table tennis and basketball were my favorites years ago (When I had time for myself)
  • Increasing the awareness of the society about plagiarism, publishing/ethics/originality/quality issues, academic promotion system, regulations and institutional attitude. Q: Which one is worse? Being a plagiarist or Seeing a plagiarist? A: It depends on where you live!
  • Discovering the beauty of writing in LaTeX.
